Cutting-edge science for a safer digital world

Complementary Plan for Quantum Communications

The Government of Spain has launched, together with 6 Autonomous Communities, the Complementary Plan for Quantum Communications aimed at reinforcing cybersecurity and promoting science and innovation in quantum communications.

The Communities of Madrid, Catalonia, the Basque Country, Galicia, Valencia and Castilla y León take part in it, as well as the Higher Center for Scientific Research (CSIC). The Community of Madrid coordinates the national program through the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

Budget: 76 M€

Why should your organization invest in quantum communications?

Nowadays, confidential information is distributed over the Internet. In areas such as healthcare, electrical supply or public services, communications security and data protection is crucial.

The traditional model leaves data encryption open to attack by experienced hackers. To make up for this vulnerability, quantum communications are used, in which encrypted messages are sent using the amazing properties of light particles: photons.

When a message is sent by using quantum communications, if someone tries to break in, the photons unentangle, the encrypted message get lost and the alarm goes off alerting there has been an intrusion (Quantum Key Distribution) or QKD. The new model of quantum communications offers an ultra-secure form of communication.

In addition, the latest advances promise an exponential acceleration in extremely high-precision measurements through quantum sensors, communications between quantum computers, capable of solving certain problems much more quickly and efficiently than traditional computers, and, finally, ultra-secure communications.
